Planning A Family Vacation? When Do You Start?

As we come upon that amazing time of the year (summer break! What were you thinking? lol) There is always the age old question: "Where are we going for the summer?"

Now, unless money is of no object, you're either going to the local pool or you're like me and have been planning this trip since last year. "A year in advance? I can't do that!" Of course you can. Its not as hard as you think and its much easier to plan for financially, and time wise. 

As soon as we finish one trip, I am already thinking about the next. Now granted, Kai is not 2 as of yet, so he still flies for free but those days are soon over..ugh!

The main reason why I like to plan at least one year in advance, is so that I can take my time to make the payments. Even if something unexpected were to arise, I would still have enough time to figure out any adjustments that would need to be made. 

Here are a few tips to aid you in planning your future family vacation:

1. Use a Travel Professional - They can do all of the research for you and all you have to do is make a decision and the initial deposit. Of course you can do it on your own, but why? Commission is earned by either the company directly or the Travel Agent. Why not give it to the one who you can get a hold of directly and assist with the entire trip?
2. Already have a budget in mind. It doesn't make sense to pick the place if you know that you could only afford $2000 but your looking at Dubai for a family of 4. Be realistic in your wants and needs. Also, remember that this is not the FINAL vacation.
3. If at all possible, try to go on the off season. "How?! You're talking about Summer Break!" Yes, I know that we're talking about summer break but if its just too much money and too stressful, pick another time. 
4. Go to a "not so popular" place at a "Popular" time. Everyone is going to Disney? Why don't you try the mountains? Or a little less popular beach?
5. Start to put money away just because. Most banks have a "Vacation Club" account that penalizes you if you withdraw before a certain time. Now you need to be disciplined but it also helps to have that deposit already prepared.
